Although there is another cell phone and repair store in the fleamarket, Marno, the owner of CaseAnnex, has noticed a need for customers wanting their cell phones repaired. The modern cell phone in fact is really a computer and digital phone merged together. In 1994 IBM developed the first Smartphone dubbed the Simon which was offered by BellSouth. It Sold 50,000 units at almost $900/unit.The Simon  was a combination cellular phone/PDA that included an x86-compatible CPU, a faxmodem, a PCMCIA Type II PC Card slot, 11 built-in programs, and a 4 1/2- by 1 1/2-inch touch-sensitive LCD screen (Source: ttp://www.bloomberg.com/bw/articles/2012-06-29/before-iphone-and-android-came-simon-the-first-smartphone)

The Simon with 1mb or ram could:

“In addition to its ability to make and receive cellular phone calls, Simon was also able to send and receive faxes, e-mails and cellular pages. Simon featured many applications including an address book, calendar, appointment scheduler, calculator, world time clock, electronic note pad, handwritten annotations and standard and predictive stylus input screen keyboards”(Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Simon)

Later In the late 1990s, many mobile phone users carried a separate dedicated PDA device, running early versions of operating systems such as Palm OS, BlackBerry OS or Windows CE/Pocket PC. These operating systems would later evolve into mobile operating systems. During this time Nokia, Erickson, Qualcomm and Palm designed and developed PDA/phones from 1993 till 2007. Even Blackberry joined the industry by manufacturing and selling phones built in Canada. It was not until 2007/2008 that the first IPhone from Apple came out. Not soon after Google.com launched it Android OS. This led many other manufacturers such as Motorola, Nokia, Samsung to build smartphones on this platform. Today there are over 1 billion smartphones in use world wide and over 1 billion shipped worldwide to customers in 2013. In the US there are 75 million smartphone and tablet users so in Canada there are at least 7 million equivalent users here.

In Canada most cell phone users have more than one phone and it’s a good bet that the other is a smartphone. One of the major issues with these units is that without a good hard case, if you drop the phone on a hard surface it will break of shatter the digitizer or damage the LCD. If you drop it in water, it’s time to buy a new phone as it cannot be fixed.

The owner of Case Annex sees a lot of damaged phones and does his best to fix them and the average repair bill is $80-150.00. If he can’t fix it he can sell customers new and used phones.

Case Annex also offers new and used unlocked smartphones for customers. The owner deals with two types of customers, the first of which is looking to upgrade from an old phone. The shelf life of most smartphones is about 2-3 years. Usually they either become obsolete due to the introduction of more advanced models with better features or the constant wear and tear on the digitizer, expansion and cooling of the battery and physical abuse takes its toll. The second type of customer is one who cannot repair their phone due to the cost and want a cheaper replacement model.

At present Case Annex offers new and used Samsung, Apple, HTC, Nokia and Sony phones for sale at its location. It is now selling new Blue Devices smartphones a mid level replacement for broken/damaged phones or a cheaper alternative to the more expensive brand name smartphones. The price range is from $75 to $300.00.

Lastly Case Annex offers good quality accessories at an affordable price. You can find there Otter Box and other brand name protective cases such as Trident. The store also has rubber cases, soft and hard cases, regular and Bluetooth headphones, chargers and mini speakers etc. If you are looking to fix or replace your smartphone as well as find accessories for it we have it at the cell Phone Repair store at the Fantastic Flea Market.
